1. Diversity -- A term referring to a group or community of people of multiple and differing backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, financial statuses, religious beliefs, personalities, etc.

2. Journalists should always be mindful of choosing the right words when writing as it speaks directly to what a journalist's job responsibilities are. Since journalists earn a living relaying information to a wide audience, he/she should use language that is not stereotypical, offensive, or neglectful to any certain person or persons and instead respect the cultural, personal, and physical differences that make individuals of that audience unique.
-Avoiding stereotypical language becomes extremely important if a journalist wants to keep a wide audience as opposed to alienating any number of individuals who could be offended by a stereotypical word, phrase, sentence, or opinion. In fact, journalists should strive to include people of all types.
-Finally, including people from all walks of life would prevent a journalist from omitting a certain group all together. Depending on the topic of the story, not mentioning or catering to a certain group could be more damaging than using stereotypes as the group is left out altogether.

1. Diversity is the way in which people differ from one another. Diversity separates people in different groups such as religion, ethnicity, sexuality, class and gender.

2. Journalists in this day and age always need to be respectful when choosing the right words when writing about a particular person or group. It is a journalists job to relay a story or message without being biased. A journalist should always avoid using stereotypes because not only are stereotypes hurtful to the person or group you are talking about, but it makes you as a journalist look unintelligent and irresponsible. Omitting a particular group, whether it be religious, ethnic, or social class is always a big no no. You should never leave any group out regardless of who or who is not reading what you are writing. You should always be fair and by leaving a group out you are in turn making them feel like they don't matter or that they are unimportant. When writing, always try and make everyone feel as though you are talking to them, or you can at least relate to them in some way.

I defined diversity as an array of characteristics of peoples including, though not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, ideals, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Professor Morris added a key aspect of diversity- the recognition of different people and not holding their differences against them, so to speak.

I believe journalists should always consider certain elements when covering topics pertaining to diversity. Such elements include the use of correct terms in order to avoid offending an individual, avoiding stereotypes and omission.
Journalists should be mindful of omission and should not commit it. Journalists should keep in mind all demographics when reporting. Journalists should avoid stereotypes in order to maintain credibility and avoid the conveyance of bias in their stories.

Question #1
I defined diversity as the differnces between races, genders, sexuality, and religion; both how they see each other and how others see them.

Question #2
Both journalists and historians must consider the following elements when writing.
A. Choosing the right words. Words are constantly changing their meanings and also what means one thing to the people of a certain region may mean something else to the people of a different region.

B. Avoiding stereotypes. Stereotypes are set ideas about a group of people and are usually wrong. An example is that all knitters are grandmothers in rocking chairs.

C. Omission is telling the story from only one or two points of view. Historically, this point of view was of white males. This leaves out the contribution of woman and minorities. All groups in a story must be covered to truly tell it truthfully.

1. Diversity is the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique,
and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along
the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies.
2.Choosing the right words, avoiding stereotypes and avoiding omission are necessary skills for journalists need to be accepted by audiences. “Right words” mean words in contexts. For example, a journalist can “hate” Kentucky soccer team but he/she cannot present his feeling when writing. If journalists are stereotypes, or stereotypical, it means they judge people in groups without basic. Like if you are talking about black people, a stereotypical comment would be "Why do you always have to rap and stuff?" If journalist omitted a particular group in their reports, what would happen? Audience would feel unfair and unrespected. Therefore, journalists should be careful when writing stories, always remember “who are the audience?”

Diversity is allowing and encouraging participation from all groups of races, ethnicities, sexes, religions and sexual orientations.

What elements should journalists consider when writing?

I selected all the options. Choosing the right words is necessary. If one is not careful, readers may be confused as to what the writer is saying and assume the worst interpretation. It is important to avoid stereotypes as well. If a detail about a person does not pertain to the story, it doesn't belong necessarily belong in the story. Omission is also an element to take into account. Be careful not to exclude other races or groups just beacuse they are not the majority.

Diversity, in my opinion, can be defined as a variety opinions, religions, attitudes, races, etc. that are shown in individuals.

Journalists are responsible for making sure to say the right things. They have to be mindful of opinions and emotions brought into play when using certain words. It is important that journalists be cautious about stereotypes. Grouping people into categories can, and will, cause the story to be opinionated or biased...and disrespectful. Journalists should also take omission into consideration when writing. In fact, including many different types of people or things is beneficial to writing. Making sure you choose words well, avoid stereotypes and include everyone are important considerations for journalists.

1. Diversity- The way I view diversity is different races, colors, sexes, sexual orientations or religions that all understand they have to coexist and often work toward one common goal.

2. A journalist has to be mindful of everything in my opinion. With every word, you have to be mindful of if your statement will offend or hurt someone. Choosing the right words is key. To me, using simple words is the best way to avoid hurting or offending people but it also is very effective in telling the proper story a journalist wants to tell. Avoiding stereotypes is something I think some people are not often able to do but unless it is something similar to an opinion column, I don't think you can even begin to use a stereotype. Personally, when I am doing a broadcast, I avoid stereotypes all together because it does not have anything to do with the actual game. I mentioned the stereotype the other day in class that black players can jump and the assumption is white players cannot. However, I believe if you are wearing a Division I basketball uniform, every player can jump. Lastly, we come to the topic of omission. I just do not think it is smart to use at all. Avoiding a certain audience just is not intelligent and as discussed should be something a journalist considers but in my opinion, does not do.

1.) Diversity-a term that refers to the difference of and in others; acknowledging those differences and accepting them for the betterment of the society as a whole. It is recognizing others are different and not holding that against them.

2.) Journalists need to be very mindful and careful on the words they chose. Language is constantly evolving and changing with the different times and places. What may be acceptable in New York may be unacceptable in West Virginia. Names and slang differ from area to area and as journalists, we must strive to overcome these danger words and concentrate on the story.

Journalists need to avoid harmful stereotypes at all costs. If a journalist insists and continuously uses stereotypical language, he/she will be alienating all types of audiences without even attempting so.

Using omission while reporting or informing of a story can be more harmful than most would realize. By only reporting one side of a story or by omitting details that could be considered harmful or degrading, the story is not fully getting reported and it is not allowing the audience top make up their own mind towards the story. Their mind is made up prior to reading the story...simply because the journalist has decided to omit specific aspects of the story.

1. Define diversity.
Diversity is the kalidescope of uniqueness that defines us as individuals and draws us into communities. Celebrating diversity respects differences while recognizing commonalities of the human condition.

2. In addition to choosing the right words, journalists should consider omission and avoiding stereotypes when writing.

Diversity is the range of difference within a group of people. It also recognizes the value and contributions of all members in the community. Diversity is an understanding that people are unique and have individual differences.

Journalist should always consider different elements when writing a story. They must choose the right words, they should always define people how they want to be defined. They should avoid stereotypes, by leaving their biased opinions out. Also the journalist must not omit a group of people because there is a small population of the group. They must consider all these elements when writing their story.

1. Diversity: A community of people from different ways of life, whether it is a different race, gender, age or sexual orientation where everyone is accepted and people understand their plight.

2. Each answer is the right one. Journalist should always be mindful of choosing the right words. A journalist must use the right words, so they do not misrepresent the subject and hide one's biases. A journalist must also avoid using stereotypes because they must think of their audience. Not only does the reporter not want to offend readers of all shades of life. It is your job to not offend, it is to inform. You must state the facts and if those stereotypical ideas doesn't add to the facts then they should not be reported. With omission, never omit a group just because you feel like they would not read the story. You need to get every side of the story. Not just one group's opinion, but everyone who would have an idea in the story.

1. Defining diversity is difficult because I believe there are so many things that make people diverse. I think we all can agree on the well-known diversities in people, such-as race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. There are however many other factors that make people diverse; simple differences such as hair color, family income, jobs, beliefs, traditions, etc... No matter how simple or plain we may think we are, we are all truly diverse in many different ways. I suppose a simple definitions for the word "diverse" would be, anything that makes an individual feel, seem, or appear different from another individual.

2. When asked, "Which of the following elements should be considered by journalists when writing?"

A. Choosing the right words
B. Avoiding stereotypes
C. Omission

I believe that a journalists need to be very aware of each element in they're writing. Choosing the right words is important because offending individuals/groups can be easily done if choosing the wrong words. Avoiding stereotypes is commonsense, they are offensive and hurtful. Omitting groups from a story will offend and isolate viewers.

1 – Define Diversity
- Diversity is understanding and being sensitive to the fact that people come in many colors, shapes and sizes and also not letting these factors affect your opinions and views of others. People are different.

2 – Which of the following elements should be considered by journalists when writing? (choosing the right words, avoiding stereotypes, omission)
- All three should be used by a responsible journalist.
Choosing the right words is important in not only effective writing, but also in making sure to maintain the proper respect for your subject.
Avoiding stereotypes is important because they can easily paint a subject in an unflattering light and also make a generalization about someone that may or may not be true. Stereotypes are a must to avoid.
Omission is also important. Omission can actually help to prevent stereotypes from becoming a factor or from entering the conversation at all.

Diversity is the differences in a group. It is what separates the individual from the rest of the people they are associated with. It is recognizing these differences and not holding them against people.

When journalists are writing, it is important for them to consider the following elements: choosing the right words, avoiding stereotypes, and omission. With omission it is important for them to consider it to make sure that they are making the right decision as to whether or not to omit information based on the situation they are in.

Diversity is the differences in different areas such as race, sex, age, religion, ethnic background, sexual preferences, etc. It also describes different types of groups realizing that no two groups, communities or organizations are the same. And that no one group, community, or organizations is better than the other.

When a journalist writes, they must consider on the wording that is chosen so that a person is not offended or misrepresented. Also stereotyping is very easy to get caught up in. Always ask the person you are interview how they want to be represented, such as, Mrs., Mr., Dr., African-American, Indian-American, Mexican or Hispanic. And never omit a group or organization because there are few of them or because you do not agree with their views.

Which of the following element should be considered by journalist when writing?

A-choosing the right words

B-avoiding stereotypes

C-omission

Blog creation and two posts assignment

I have created my blog at lnewman77.blogspot.com.

1. Define diversity.

Diversity can be defined as the difference between individuals that are based on several factors. Factors that can be used are: culture, race, sex, education, geographic background, and even physical appearance. It is recognition of appreciation for the differences that exist among people. It can also be used as a celebration of an individual, because all people are different in their own way. Thereby, making all individuals unique; for example, similar to a snowflake and how each snowflake in the entire world is different. There are no two flakes that are the same; just as diversity allows for individualism of our society.

2. Which of the following elements should be considered by journalists when writing? A. Choosing the right words B. Avoiding stereotypes C. Omission

I feel that all journalists must use all of these elements when considering the responsibility that is held by the position. Journalists have a duty to report and distribute information to the public that is accurate and must always use the right words. They must use the right words to convey their message correctly and without any confusion of their message or of the information.
In addition, a journalist must provide a non-bias opinion by avoiding stereotypes in their language through all forms of communication. The position of the journalist requires that all stereotypes are avoided and report the truth and not just opinion or an overused way to describe a situation, which is stereotyping.
Omission is considered a sin to Catholics, not just journalists. This may be the most important of the three elements listed. Failure to do something that we can do and know that we ought to do is a failure of ethics. Journalists have an obligation to report the information to the public in a way that has no opinion, that is purely fact, and most of all does not omit anything from the reported information. The public rely on the information given to them by journalists because it is expected as an ethical value. The use of ethics and a non usage of omission in a journalists report should be used in every single situation.
